Nunda --- Robert E. Weir Jr. of 68 Mill Street passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord with his family at his side on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Highland Hospital, Rochester. He was born on May 17, 1927 in Nunda, a son of the late Robert E Weir Sr. and Catherine. On August 22, 1970 in Nunda he married Isabelle Rogato who survives.

Bob and his wife Isabelle celebrated 44 years of blessed marriage devoted to their children and grandchildren. Through the years hundreds of friends, relatives and organizations have laughed, been feed bountifully, and enjoyed stimulating conversation and debates together in the Weir home. God has blessed Robert E. Weir Jr. and he is forever grateful.

Bob graduated from Nunda Central School, class of 1944 and from Cornell University with an Associate’s Degree in Agri-Business. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving from August of 1945 to February of 1947. Bob worked for Rochester Gas and Electric for 35 years and retired as District Marketing Manager in 1986. He enjoyed gardening, wood cutting, working in the woods, purchasing walnut trees, had a great appreciation for nature, loved animals, loved people and loved his town of Nunda.

He was a member of Nunda Rotary Club for 40 years and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. Bob served in local politics for 20 years, serving as mayor and town and village board member. He contributed to many organizations including serving as Chaplain of the American Legion and the VFW, library board, Nunda Community Home and superintendent of Oakwood Cemetery Association.

He was the originator and volunteer for the project to clean up the Erie Canal Locks in Nunda. He worked on the construction of the Mt. Morris Dam.  Bob was the Nunda Senior Citizen of the Year in 2001.

Bob was an active member of Hunt Baptist Church for over 40 years. Bob’s church involvements were served as chairman of the trustees, working with the Monday evening Awana group for 22 years, he founded a men’s group 40 years ago that exists to this day, meeting twice monthly in his home. Bi-yearly the group sponsors a men’s breakfast with special challenging devotional and inspiring speakers. Usually 60 to 70 members would attend this event.

He coordinated the construction of the maintenance building at Camp Cherith of Western New York all with volunteer work. Bob was privileged to go on the Honor Flight with WWII veterans to Washington D.C. He sold monuments for Gibney Monuments in Perry for many years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are their sons, Matthew (Lori) Weir of Nunda, Les (Ellen) Upright of Youngstown, OH, a daughter, Sonya L. Weir of Castile, grandchildren, Shelby Smith, David Hardeman, Jenna Weir, Tyler Weir, Jackson Weir, Joshua and Jennifer Upright, and a great grandchild, Mikayla Upright, sister in law Betty Weir of Nunda, many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Jordan H. Weir.

Family and friends may gather from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2014 at the Hunt Baptist Church where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. David Seely, Rev. Jerry Feulmer, and Dr. Jonathan Young will co-officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery with full military honors accorded by members of Seager Werner Post 333 American Legion of Nunda.
