Ruth Hutton

HOUGHTON – Ruth Fancher Hutton, 92, died Feb. 14, 2014, at Olean General Hospital in Olean after a short illness.

She was born Feb. 10, 1922, in the parlor of the family home in Houghton. She was the daughter of H. LeRoy Fancher and Isabella Stebbins Fancher and attended local schools, graduating from Houghton Academy in 1939 and from Houghton College in 1943.

She taught English and math for two years in Bliss, N.Y., and spent a year teaching at a children’s home in Hazard, Ky., before earning a master's degree in Christian education in 1947 at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. She then moved to Vermont to work as an itinerant Bible teacher in the public schools with New England Fellowship.

At one farm where she stayed on weekends she became acquainted with a young man, Lindol Hutton. Although she declined his first proposal of marriage, in the end she agreed to marry him.

Ruth had no idea that saying yes to a Vermont farmer would bring her back to her hometown to raise six children with him and teach at Houghton College, where her father and Fancher aunts and uncles before her had served. As she often reminded us, God gives us not what we think we want, but what He knows we need.

The couple were married on Aug. 5, 1950, in Houghton and spent their first three years of married life living on his farm in West Barnet, Vt., before moving to Houghton so Lindol could attend Houghton College.

While raising their six children, Ruth taught English part time at Houghton Academy, then taught at Houghton College from 1962 to 1988, retiring as associate professor of English. She also earned a master’s degree in speech communication from SUNY Brockport in 1977.

She was “Mrs. Hutton” to years of college students and a mentoring mother to a special few, and in retirement she was "Grandma Ruth" to Houghton Church Valley Preschoolers. She also started the Genesee Valley Habitat for Humanity, and wrote a weekly column, From the Rocking Chair, for the Wellsville Daily Reporter. Ruth and Lindol were members of the Houghton Wesleyan Church and Gideons International.

Among her many interests and passions were sewing, flower gardening, wallpapering, furniture refinishing, reading, travel – especially to visit grandchildren – and sharing the love of Christ with all her family and friends.  Ruth would be the first to tell you that the most important yes she ever said was to receive Jesus Christ as her Savior in a children’s service led by her Aunt Marietta Fancher in the old Houghton Church building.

In addition to her husband of 63 years, the family includes four sons, Jeremy (Lisa) Hutton of Lincolnton, Ga., Timothy (Sue) Hutton of Brantford, Ont., Roderic (Carolyn) Hutton of Madbury, N.H., and Willard (Donna) Hutton of Holland, Mass.; two daughters, Nancy Jo (David) Pullen of Houghton and Rebecca Hutton of Houghton; 26 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a foster daughter, Kelly Turner-Irland, of Daytona Beach, Fla. Ruth was predeceased by two brothers, Charles Fancher and Rocky (Betty) Fancher, and a sister, Esther (Douglas) Lister., and a grandchild, Gloria Hutton. She is survived by two sisters, Margaret (Fred) Serley of Haverhill, Mass., and Joanna Fancher of Tempe, Ariz.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may gather from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, at Kopler-Williams Funeral Home, 21 North Genesee St., Fillmore, and from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Houghton Wesleyan Church, where a funeral service will follow at 2. Rev. Dr. Wesley Oden will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Houghton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wellspring Ministries, 5993 County Road 16, Belfast, NY 14711; Houghton Academy; or Houghton Wesleyan Church food pantry.

Both Laura and I are very sad that Ruth has passed. But, she had an extremely wonderful life with her husband Lyndol and all her children. She had the opportunity to do many wonderful things in her life, which touched many people. We should all be so lucky to do the same. Please know that we both love you all and are sorry that we cannot attend the funeral, due to the weather forecast at this time of the year. Our prayers and love are with you all.

My heartfelt condolences to the whole family. Mrs. Hutton was a wonderful teacher and loving mentor. How bitter is her absence here, but how sweet the joy of knowing that she has gone on to meet her blessed Savior and Friend face to face.

A special note to Becky: I am so glad that I met you and your Mom last fall on the sidewalk in front of Luckey Building. She was so sweet and charming to me that day, just as I remembered her from 40 years ago!

So many memories...I am so sorry to hear that your mom has passed. She was kind to invite me into your family home to visit during the time my mom had her horrendous accident and I was staying to care for her. She showed me around the lovely home I remember visiting several times as a child, that I liked so much. My dad and yours built their homes at around the same time and as I remember helped each other with that a great deal. Mr. Hutton remembered me and was also able to talk to me when I visited, and I enjoyed the time with them very much. She will be much missed, and I know and understand the pain you are going through right now because of that. But we know that we have a Comforter in our times of sorrow. A special thought goes to all of her children, Becky, Nancy Jo, Jerry, Timmy and Rod. We had a lot of good times growing up on our street together in Houghton and our moms were a big part of that. Love to all of you, Cindy (Montanye) Gibson

Dick & I are sorry to learn of your loss, but rejoice with you that she is safely home now. Ruth & Lindol were part of our nearly 20 years at Houghton and we enjoyed getting to know them. Reading her obituary taught me many more things about this remarkable lady! Houghton NY has lost many of our generation, all of whom made Houghton the special place it was. May the Lord comfort all of you family members in your loss.

I have so many memories of Mrs. Hutton. She was my Principles of Writing teacher my first year at Houghton, and I did enjoy that class! It was also at the Hutton home that I met my future in-laws. They kindly allowed a Davis gathering around their dinner table. Down through the years I met her at Houghton almost every time I visited, and she always had a smile and a twinkle in her eye. She will be missed by so many, but we can only rejoice she is now with her Saviour and we will see her later on. God bless you as you prepare to celebrate a well-lived life on Sat.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of 'Grandma Ruth'. I met her when I worked at Valley Pre School. She was a wonderful woman and will be greatly missed.

Becky and siblings---I remember your mom as a busy and gracious "house mom" to my boyfriend, Jim Francis who lived in the basement of your house when we were students at Houghton in the 60s. Then, again, when our oldest son, Jim, Jr. was a student at Houghton, he was able to also live at "Hutton House" and get to know your mom and dad as loving mentors and friends. Your mom was a compassionate hostess for us when Jim, Jr. was killed in that tragic accident during his Junior year. I will never forget her loving "mom to mom" advice and support. I enjoyed staying connected when you lived with and cared for my husband's mother those years in Rochester and being involved in your mom's marvelous recovery from her stroke. She was a godly, gracious lady and contributed God's grace to many lives.

Dear Becky, Rod, Mary Jo, and all, I'm very late with this, but was behind in my reading of the Houghton magazine, and just discovered, in glancing through the spring/summer issue, that Ruth passed away, and Lindol too. I enjoyed my two years of living with your parents so much! They gave me a home away from home in Houghton. Thank you all for being "family" to me, because as an older student, I didn't always fit in with my classmates. I know that I learned a lot from Ruth's and Lindol's gentle ways, as well as the wonderful recipes that I copied. She made the best chili, and my rhubarb coffee cake recipe is from her too. I see that the student scholarship fund at Houghton College lets you give in memory of someone, and so, although the college is not mentioned in the obit as a place to send $, I will give there in honor of your parents, as I never would have met them if I hadn't been a student. You all have a wonderful heritage in the Lord, passed down from your parents. May the God of all comfort comfort your hearts and enable you to comfort others, when they need it, with the same comfort that you have received from him. (II Cor. 1: 2-5) Judi
