Doris Mae (Driscoll) Wells

Houghton---Doris Wells of 9900 Luckey, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in the Absolut at Houghton Nursing Home. She was born on February 22, 1921 in Dushore, PA, the third of eight children of the late Fred and Harriett McCarty Driscoll.  She married George R. Wells who predeceased her on October 15, 2009.

Upon graduation from high school, Doris ventured out of Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, to attend Houghton College.  She proved to be a committed Christian, diligent student, and outstanding athlete.  She was characterized by a quiet and gracious spirit, determination, and tenacity.

During her college years, Doris attracted the attention and won the heart of George R. Wells, a fellow student at Houghton and eventual officer in the United States Navy and professor at the College.  But, she didn’t open her heart to George until he had accepted her Lord as his Savior while on a date where she left him stranded in a youth service where he heard and responded to the Gospel for the first time.

Although Doris was a career junior high school teacher who cared deeply for her students, she is best characterized as a dedicated wife and mother.  She dreaded the daily commute to and from work and any social event, but cherished time with her family.

Surviving are her children, G. Robert (Beth) Wells of Severn, Maryland, Laura Lee (Spud) Wentzel of Dillsburg, Pa., Delores Wells of Albany, Darlene Wells of Houghton, David (Lois) Wells of Quito, Ecuador, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 in the Kopler-Williams Funeral Home 21 N. Genesee Street, Fillmore. The Rev. G. Robert Wells, son of Mrs. Wells will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Houghton.
