Nunda --- Cassandra Lynn James Hugi passed away peacefully in her home on September 18, 2026 surrounded by her loving family after a very hard fought battle with cancer. Cassandra was born on October 6, 1977 a daughter of Michael and Pamela James.

She was a graduate of Fillmore Central School and achieved a nursing degree from Alfred State College in 1998.

From an early age it was evident Cassandra was born to take care of people, animals, and things. Childhood kitten round-ups on her grandma's farm quickly turned into rehabilitating and rehoming foster kittens with professional rescuers as an adult. When it came to what she wanted to be when she grew up, taking care of people was always the goal and after obtaining her degree she became a traveling nurse and acquired nursing licences in 3 states, eventually landing the job of her dreams as the elementary school nurse of the school her children would attend.

Cassandra married the love of her life, Markus Hugi on June 9, 2001 and quickly started her favorite role ever...mother to Alexandra, Isabella, Lillianna, and Korben.

Cassandra will be remembered for being someone you could count on. She will be remembered for supporting her children on every field and court, but most well known for being MRS. SOFTBALL, playing every position from coach to team nurse. She will also be remembered for having a wickedly funny sense of humor, a love of sunflowers, relaxing on the beach and listening to the ocean, wearing sandals in winter, and the ability to make people feel special. She will also be remembered for fighting with everything she had to stay here to take care of her kids, but mostly she will be remembered for the way she made us all feel...loved and cared for.

In addition to her paternal and maternal grandparents, she was preceded in death by her mother, Pamela James. Surviving in addition to her father Michael James, are siblings Vanessa (Mark) Cone and Curtis James, husband Markus Hugi, and her 4 children......her little lights. She also leaves behind many nieces, a nephew, a great-nephew, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, coworkers and all the kids at school.

We will carry her with us in the sunflowers, in the butterflies, in the sound of the ocean, in sandy toes and sandals worn when it was far too cold outside, and in all the little things that will forever remind us of her.

Family and friends are invited to come together, share memories, enjoy food, and celebrate the beautiful life Cassandra lived and the love she gave to so many at a Celebration of Cassandra’s life held at the Short Tract Fire Hall on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.
