Donald E. Bliss

Rushford- We are sad to announce that Donald E. Bliss passed away peacefully Saturday morning October 8, 2022 in his home. He was born in Belfast on February 8, 1928, a son of the late Alton and Gertrude Bliss. On October 23, 1948 in Rushford he married Lois Newton who survives.

Don was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946. He was active in the Rushford Volunteer Fire Department for more than 60 years where he received the Fireman of the Year Award in 2016, served on the Rushford Town board from 1988 to 2017 and was a member of the Arcade American Legion.

Over Don’s lifetime he was well known as the Owner and Operator of Don’s Septic Service, a business he founded in 1971. Don was also a farmer, long haul trucker, bulldozer operator, school bus driver and mechanic.

Don’s passion was helping his family. He was generous with his time and expertise in all areas of life. He was always available to offer help in any situation.

Don bestowed upon us many gems of wisdom, including “don’t wish your life away” and “it is a poor carpenter who cannot cover up his own mistakes.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Don, gardening, woodworking, taking care of his lawn, hunting and presiding over his annual 4th Of July party.

Don always had a twinkle in his eye, and we will all miss the spark he provided at family gatherings.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Dennis A. (Pam) Bliss of Rushford and Randall C. (Vicky) Bliss of High Point North Carolina, six grandchildren, Curt (Roxanne) Baker, William (Becky) Bliss, Eric (Sarah) Bliss, Tracy (Randy Green) Pastorius, Erin (Dan) Retting, Jennifer (Kevin) Baker, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 11:00 am in White Cemetery, Rushford. Rev. Bruce Smith, pastor of the Higgins Wesleyan Church, will officiate.
