Fillmore

Fillmore --- Gerald “Gerry” F. McGlynn, 93, of 10495 Route 19 died peacefully in his own home as he wished on Friday, May 16, 2025. He was born on May 28, 1931, in Buffalo, a son of the late Peter and Monica Doyle McGlynn. In 1953 he married Carole Jean Lowrey who survives.

Gerry graduated from Buffalo State Teacher’s College with his BS in Elementary Education in 1954. During his time as a teacher, he taught 6th grade at Niagara Falls Public schools from 1955 to 1969 during which he received his master’s degree in 1964.

In 1969 Gerry and Carole moved their family to Rushford Lake and he began teaching 6th grade in Fillmore Central School until his retirement in 1989. He enjoyed his work in a rural/small town school and still counts among his friends, many of his former students from his teaching days.

In his retirement, Gerry and Carole enjoyed going to Venice, Florida for 15 years during the winter months. They summered at Rushford Lake and during that time spent many happy hours with their local grandsons boating, fishing and swimming at the lake. In 2003 they decided to leave Florida and resettled in a new home in Fillmore to be closer to family.

Gerry was an avid gardener and enjoyed working in his flowers and vegetable gardens. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in the woods and streams of Allegany County. He also was particularly fond of doing acrylic paintings of the rural landscapes and gave most of his painting to family, friends and churches in the area.

He became very involved in the Wide Awake Club Library in Fillmore through Carole who was a trustee. He was appointed project manager for the construction of the new library building and saw the project through to its completion. During its Grand Opening in November of 2015, he was flattered and extremely proud of the fact that they named the “McGlynn Community Room” in honor of his efforts to see the library completed.

Surviving in addition to his wife are their children, Michael (Dodi) McGlynn of Battle Creek, MI, Colleen (Tim) Marcum of Hedgesville, WV, Lisa (Darel) Bower of Fillmore, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren with one on the way in the fall.
