Isobel M.L. Alexander – Loving Mother, Nana and Great-Nana

Houghton---Isobel M.L. Alexander formerly of 9800 Fancher Heights, died Friday, January 31, 2014 in the Absolut at Houghton Nursing Home. She was born on November 16, 1921 in Edinburgh, Scotland, a daughter of the late David and Jessie Russell Thomson. She married David S.J. Alexander in 1943 who predeceased her on March 7, 2009.

Mrs. Alexander received a MA Degree from Edinburgh University where she met her husband, David.  During World War II, she worked for the British Navy and was involved with protecting the Allied ships from mines.

After the war, in 1946, they moved to the U.S. where her husband worked for the United Nations for 32 years. They lived in New Jersey with their two children.  Isobel was actively involved in their church life for many years.

They spent their retirement years in Houghton and enjoyed life there and lived near one of their daughters.  Isobel was a member of the Houghton Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Shona (Roger) Casteline of White Hall, Maryland, Virginia (Richard) Halberg of Houghton, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may gather from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2014 at Kopler-Williams Funeral Home, 21 North Genesee Street, Fillmore and from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Houghton Wesleyan Church where the funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m.  The Rev. Dr. Wesley Oden, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Houghton.
