Houghton --- Karen Lynne Gaerte (née Conrad) left this world on June 26, 2026 in her home being held in the loving embrace of her family and her Savior. She was born on November 23, 1941, in the town of Wolf Lake, Indiana, a daughter of the late Ronald E. and Sarah Jane Mahnesmith Conrad. On March 5, 1960 in Merriam Chapel she married Kenneth Gaerte.

Throughout her eighty-four years, Karen’s radiant warmth shaped the hearts and lives of those dear to her. She shared sixty-six years of companionship and love with her beloved husband, Ken, building a home where faith and family flourished side by side. Their journey together was marked by laughter-filled family vacations—cherished cruises and memorable trips to Charleston and Myrtle Beach, forging bonds and memories that her children and grandchildren will hold close for lifetimes.

Karen’s identity was strongly rooted in service—to her Lord, her family, and her community. Her love for her Savior, Jesus Christ, shone through in all she did. She was a cherished member of the Houghton Wesleyan Church, and was known as a prayer warrior whose faith buoyed others through trials and triumphs alike. Her commitment to the Gideon's International extended well beyond mere membership as she faithfully held several offices, helping spread the message she so dearly believed.

Professionally, Karen found purpose and fulfillment as a secretary at Ft. Wayne Christian School and several churches. There, she touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and families, sharing daily encouragement, organization, and steadfast support.

Those who knew Karen recognized her artistry and craftsmanship. She was a remarkable seamstress whose loving hands fashioned clothing and quilts that warmed the lives of family and friends. Quilting, knitting, and reading brought her quiet moments of joy, and many were blessed by her talents—none more legendary than her homemade cheesecake, a treat that became synonymous with family celebrations.

Karen’s greatest pride and joy was her family. She poured out her love abundantly on her children—Douglas (Phyllis) Gaerte and Lori (Todd) Rabal —and extended that same affection to her grandchildren: Andrew (Samantha) Gaerte, Jesse (Anne) Scarcella, Emily (Michael) Spateholts, Sara Kenny, Timothy (Caitlin) Scarcella, Jonah (Shelby) Scarcella and Samuel Rabal. She loved nothing more than gathering her grandchildren for camping adventures in state parks. She is survived by her brothers Dennis Conrad (Peggy) and Keith Conrad (Mary), along with cherished nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brother Larry Conrad, her sister-in-law Patricia Conrad, and her son-in-law Joseph Scarcella.

A graveside service will be held at Merriam Chapel in Merriam, Indiana at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Kopler-Williams Funeral Home, 21 N Genesee Street, Fillmore.
