Betty J. (Cross) Merriam

Houghton --- Betty J Merriam of 9597 Route 19 went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 22, 2022 in her home. She was born on November 13, 1938 in Shinglehouse, PA, a daughter of the late Ferdinand and Naomi Green Cross. On September 20, 1958 she married Floyd Edward Merriam who survives.

Betty was a graduate of Wellsville Central School, class of 1957, graduated from Jamestown Practical School of Nursing in 1958 and was a graduate of Elohim Bible School in Castile in 1967. She was a former LPN for several area hospitals and nursing homes.

She was a member of the Fillmore Wesleyan Church and TOPS #927 of Hume. Betty enjoyed writing personalized cards to numerous individuals and she would write between 60 to 80 cards a month. Her greatest joy in life was her family where she was a devoted wife, caring mother and loving grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 64 years are their children, Tom (Ashley) Merriam of York, PA, Rick Merriam of Silver Lake, Dave (Pat) Merriam of Hornell, Becky (Guy) Hendricks of Greeneville, TN, nine grandchildren, close friends, Donald Heinz of Rochester, NY, Jerry and Alice York of Maine, a sister, Geraldine Monroe of Olean, a brother, Carl (Margaret) Cross of Wellsville and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a twin son, a daughter-in-law, Judy Merriam, a sister, Elizabeth Lawton, six brothers-in-law, Don Lawton, Larry Monroe, Wesley Merriam, Wilder Merriam, Henry Merriam, Gene Merriam, three sisters-in-law, Martha Merriam, Doris Merriam and Florence Merriam.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 11:00 am in the Fillmore Wesleyan Church. Pastor Rob Engler will officiate. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Scio.
