Pike --- Mary Bowen, a lifelong resident of Pike, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 in the Houghton Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility. She was born on May 24, 1934 in Salamanca, a daughter of the late Leon and Dolores McAndrew Bean. On August 28, 1954 she married Gordon H. Bowen who predeceased her on February 14, 1996.
Gordon and Mary moved to Spencer Street in Pike on August 31, 1954 where they purchased the Whitney Farm. After farming and cattle dealing, they sold the farm and moved across the road.
Mary was a member of the Pike Community Church, a 4-H leader and served on many committees for many years. She was also a volunteer at Fillmore Central School, serving kindergarten and 1st grade. Mary was a member of the Domestic Violence Task Force of Allegany County for a number of years as a board member, answering hotline calls and spending time with the children.
Surviving are her daughters, Mary Jane (James) Perkins of Fillmore, Linda (David) Edwards of Houghton, two granddaughters, Nicole (Keelen) Yanda of Fillmore, Stacy (Robert) Roessel, a great grandson, Cooper, five brothers, seven sisters, forty-six nieces and nephews and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may gather from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at the Pike Community Church, 52 Main Street, Pike where a funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm. Pastor Timothy Bucknam will officiate. Burial will be in Alger Cemetery, Fillmore.
