Caneadea --- Richard B. Perkins, beloved husband of Valerie Perkins, died May 27, 2022 after a prolonged illness. He died after spending time with dear friend Brian Sayers, at one of his favorite places, the pond out back.
Rich was preceded in death by his first wife Valda “Beaver” Perkins, parents Clark and Carolyn, his brother Robert, and a cousin, Doug.
Those surviving to mourn his passing include his wife Valerie, children Dave (Michelle LaBarre) Perkins, Kristina (Matt) Stephen, grandchildren Jessica and Connor, as well as many dear friends and extended family.
Rich was a decorated Vietnam Veteran, Professor of Sociology at Houghton College, avid backpacker, insightful critic, had a terrific sense of playfulness, and curiosity about a broad range of topics. Playing guitar while singing with friends, enjoying his dogs, and watching a wide variety of documentaries while riding his “bike-to-nowhere” were among his favorite pastimes. He valued honest conversations and developed a broad network of like-minded friends. He envisioned the Christian body of Believers living intimate and honest lives together; where people went well beyond Sunday gatherings and sought to live out Christ’s teachings corporately as well as individually.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 2:30 pm in the Houghton Wesleyan Church. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hingham, Massachusetts.
Memorials if desired to: Houghton Volunteer Fire Department, Houghton College or The SPCA serving Allegany County.
